Thinking about vs actually doing something

1 April, 2009

I’ve been thinking about this book I want to write. Something in my head… just waiting to be written.

I’ve had the idea in my head for almost a year now… but I can’t seem to get it started.

You see, the problem is, that I can see how it starts beautifully, and then I can see maybe the first chapter… and after that, well, what is the plot, the story line? I know that once I start it, the words will come, the story will flow, and the character will find herself as and when she is meant to.

Now I’m not sure exactly how the story will go, or even if I should write about it in this space…  I know that if I give the idea, and the start, then its my idea, my copywrite,  but I also know that the internet is a magical place, where everyone has access to everything…

On the other side of the coin… perhaps it is the best place to start it… because that will then give me a time and place to write what I want to write… to at least see where it will go….

It may be a bit dark, a bit sad, a bit horrible… I have some really strange things that go on in my mind at the best of times…

So, if you are keen, then, perhaps tomorrow I will start writing the story that is in my head. This will be a first draft – one that will be improved upon as I type it up and out… you will see the first “rendition” and I would also love feedback, you know, perhaps this should happen, or that should happen – and we can guide the story like that…

Do you remember those books, you know “If X says no to this, turn to page 55, if he says yes, turn to page 92″. And in that way, you drove the story… I hated those books (besides the point I know)… but there won’t be another option, I will take into account any comments, or just continue to write what is in my head….

Starting (hopefully) tomorrow…

  1. All the best with your writing. I recently began a new novel while I wait for news on my first. I started last Monday and now have 12,000 words. It’s great fun. I’ve been posting articles on creative writing on my blog, along with tips on how to deal with writer’s block.

  2. I would love to read whatever ideas you’ve got in that busy mind of yours, Sam. I understand your fear though – I also half-worry about posting my stories and such because of copyright issues etc. etc. but it can’t be helped. The internet is an important media and for novelists who are just starting out it might be a blessing because you can get the story out there and see the response.
If you want to share it with us, I’m going to be excited to read :) .

  3. Once you get the passion of the book through your veins, it will play like a movie in your head. Can’t wait to read it!

  4. Just start writing in whatever format you feel comfortable with. I do think that once you get started it will eventually take on a life of it’s own somehow. I have always wanted to write a book but never really thought I had the ability to get past the first page.
I would be excited to read it but at the same time I fully understand your concern about copyright should you decide to post it here. Only you know if this is the best place to start writing it and I am looking forward to reading it should you decide to post it here.

  5. Fantastic! I can´t wait.. just let it out! all the best of luck to you!

  6. If you post the actual story up, you’ve used your first printing rights, and that is what most publishers buy. As for an idea, you’re pretty safe. An idea can’t be copyrighted anyway, and even if someone did decide to use it, they can’t possibly come up with the same story you do.

I can prove it to you. Write a short story, 4,000 words in length, about a blind girl sitting on a beach. I guarantee you it will not be the same as the one I have, even if I walked you through all the details (like super-powers and the loss of them.)

Go ahead. ^^ I’d love to see what you come up with.

  7. Thanks all of you! I am slowly getting braver!
